Acts 2:42-47 – The wonderful ongoing effect in people’s lives

The account of Pentecost and the addition of 3000 persons to the Church is followed by an account of the life of the church in its ongoing expression. There is a devotion to 4 activities – the apostles’ teaching, the fellowship of believers, the breaking of bread, and prayer.

The apostles’ teaching is accompanied by signs and wonders and the fellowship includes the sharing of material blessings according to need.

Everybody likes the final statement: And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

Everyone says that they would like to be in a church like that. We can be a church like that if each of us is devoted to learning the Bible with others, inviting people over for meals, and being intentional in breaking bread and praying with others. It is not an impossible reality we just need to do these things.

Breaking bread together – such a Jesus-like thing to do (in Luke’s gospel) – he made new communities, associations, families etc.
