Haggai 2:10-19 – God will turn to bless

The basic idea is as follows: Holiness is not easily transmitted but uncleanness is. Up to this point everything the remnant has been doing has rendered them unclean. This is because they have been doing ordinary things, but the things of God have been relegated to second place.

God’s response to the uncleanness of their hands and lives was to strike them and all the products of their toil with blight and with mildew and with hail, yet they did not turn to Yahweh. In other words, God struck them with the covenant curses for disobedience.

However, now God asks them to take notice of the date. From this day they have responded in repentance and faith by laying the foundation for God’s house. Is the seed yet in the barn? Indeed, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have yielded nothing. But from this day on I will bless you i.e. with the covenant blessings for obedience.

This passage could be summarized as: Seek first the kingdom of God and all these other things will be added to you.
