Hosea 13:1-14 – Where O Grave is Your Sting

In Hosea 13:1 Israel incurred guilt through idolatry – and died.

Several images are used for judgment. Israel will be like the morning dew – with the heat of the morning sun it is gone. Israel again experiences God as being like a lion, a leopard, and a bear – ripped open and devoured – dead!

Finally, in 13:14 hope shines forth. In this verse God says: I shall ransom them from the power of Sheol; I shall redeem them from Death.

God says: O Death, where are your plagues? O Sheol, where is your sting? In other words, death and all that threatens life has been rendered powerless – and the last phrase of verse 14 says: relenting is hidden from my eyes i.e. God will not change his mind.
