Joel 2:12-17 – Return to the Lord

Who can stand on the Day of the LORD? Joel has described the LORD’s locust-army that brings devastation and death (famine resulting from the loss of produce).

The answer is those who repent and turn to the LORD. People are called to turn to the LORD with all their hearts and with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning. People are not simply to tear their garments in outward grief but to tear their hearts in grief at their sin.

Will responding to God in this way be effective? Yes. Joel quotes the “John 3:16” of the Old Testament which is Exodus 34:6-7. The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster. Repentance and faith that believes what God has revealed about himself will bring salvation. Joel speaks of the locusts leaving some grain and wine so that people can again worship the LORD with sacrifices in the temple.

Who can stand before the LORD on the Day of the LORD’s judgment? Those who respond in repentance and faith.

Who and when should people repent? Everyone – elders, children, even babies, even brides and bridegrooms should interrupt their wedding nights. Now is the time to repent of our sin – immediately above all other priorities.
