Luke 17:20-37 – The Days of Noah and Lot

When Jesus says that the kingdom of God is in the midst of you, he means in the midst of you (plural) not in the midst of you (singular). In other words, the kingdom is not inside individuals but rather the kingdom is present among the Pharisees in the person, word and deeds of Jesus.

Turning to his disciples Jesus speaks that in the future they/we will long to see the fulness of the kingdom of the Daniel 7 ‘son of man’ ruling his consummated kingdom. When the kingdom is finally consummated it will no longer be hidden but rather it will be as sudden and visible as lightning.

Two things will proceed Jesus’ coming in power and glory. First, he will suffer and be rejected by the Jewish people in 33 A.D. Second, people will be engaged in ordinary affairs prior to the coming of the kingdom.

People will be eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage just as they were before the sudden judgment of the Flood in the days of Noah or the fire and sulphur that came on Sodom and Gomorrah in the days of Lot. At that moment a division will be made between people – one will be taken and the other left.

It is always important to be ready for the coming of Jesus. Are we encouraged by the presence of the kingdom among us already? Are we longing for the full consummation? Are we being faithful?
